limbo state of mind: A Photographic Independent Study
Spring 2015 Hobart and william Smith Colleges
I am interested in the psychology behind what I consider a limbo state of mind. I imagine you are not awake, but rather stuck in a subconscious dream state. It is a blurry vision of uncertainty in your mind and there is no control over it. This becomes an in between state of mind, all meanings and identity is called into question. There is no way to know what is going to come next. While someone is constantly shifting from a deep unconscious sleep to a semi-conscious state where their eyes open but do not focus, we know that they are there and that their mind is wandering and trying to wake up. This project represents one striving to push out of this limbo state, looking to find a way to wake up.
There is a demand for clarity from the viewer but the overlapping and broken images represent the challenges of uncertainty; there is an intentional ambiguity to the images. It is an unconstructed space of an unknown infinite subconscious; the broken images flow abruptly into one another. The multiple-exposure allows for the images to have this soft, dream like feel where nothing is solidified in place; allowing for shifts and changes to constantly happen.
